Looks Like A Tight Squeeze

It looks like a tight fit for this Fountain 38 Sportfish to pass under the Harbour Island Bridge but actually there's plenty of room. Just don't get too close to the barnacle-encrusted pilings if you care about your boat.

Monster Fireman Ain't Scary

We bought our son this "adorable and lovable" blue monster in 1985. Even with the big teeth and green, pickle-looking nose, we assured our son that Monster would be his best friend forever (BFF) and protect him (and his toys) against all comers. And, it worked. Now with our "little boy" long out of the house, and an architect at that, we've finally found the perfect new home for his friend, Monster. Can you believe he's been waiting a quarter of a century for a new place to play?? Our grandson plopped his fireman's hat on him today and took him home. I told our grandson that he's now well protected from other monsters and that his toys would be guarded extremely well. Last I looked, Monster was driving away from the house, cozy against the car seat, fireman's hat firmly in place on his blue and red hair. I think he was grinning but with those teeth it's hard to tell.

Not my car in the accident although I was stopped in traffic a while on the Howard Franklin Bridge of Interstate 275 North crossing Tampa Bay. It is a beautiful view (not the wrecked car) but not for this unfortunate driver and his late-model BMW. I did put the windows down to enjoy the somewhat cool breeze off the bay. It was very slow going.

Lebowski's Men's Hair Salon was on Channelside Drive across from the dry docks. Described as a "man cave," men received the royal treatment from the "Lebowski girls." It has recently closed but the outstanding wall art remains. It was always so crowded with cars when I'd drive by I could never get a clear shot of the huge and colorful exploding wall art.

This image is a favorite of mine from the exhibition that closed today at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. This evening's Wrap Party for the exhibition, Changing Identities: The Len Prince Photographs of Jessie Mann, gave us all an opportunity to get up close to the prints and to the photographer who created them. This image, a close resemblance to the artist Andy Warhol - including the darkroom setting and Polaroid SX-70 camera around her neck - was hosted by the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg Friends of Photography. The event featured the photographer, Len Prince, in a very casual one-on-one discussion of his art, his model and muse, Jessie Mann (the daughter of photographer Sally Mann), and an enlightening Q & A with Prince about his techniques and working relationship with Jessie. It was all terribly interesting and a wonderful opportunity to spend time with the artist.

Here is the Museum of Fine Arts' description of the exhibition: "Len Prince is celebrated for glamorous portraits of Hollywood stars and sleek advertisements for Cartier and Estée Lauder. In 2001 he met a self-possessed young woman, Jessie Mann, who had practically grown up in front of the camera. Sally Mann’s nude photographs of her children, including Jessie, created great controversy, igniting debate over child exploitation, censorship, and the nature of art.

"By the end of Prince’s first session photographing the adult Jessie, she had become his muse. What followed was a five-year collaboration exploring archetype, transformation, and identity. These have become some of Prince’s most accomplished and respected photographs.

"Prince and Mann make compelling images that reference paintings, famous photographs, historical figures, and mythology. They have been inspired by Ingres’ sumptuous Grand Odalisque, May Ray’s solarized image of Lee Miller, and Robert Mapplethorpe’s self- portrait in leather chaps, among other images. While these photographs can be disturbing and stark, they are often beautiful and fascinating. Theatrical and seductive, these unforgettable images explore the relationship between viewer, subject, and artist by examining personae and their meaning, as well as the very nature of the self." - Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, FL

A real Florida palm tree growing up against a wall in the courtyard of a Ybor City bar has been wrapped by a metal tabletop, hung with strings of lights and decorated with fake, metal palm frawns. What other abuse can a palm take and still live? How 'bout gallons of beer poured around its roots. Yeh, that'll make it happy.

Go-Fast Boats on Garrison Channel: Design, Speed and Fun

A Nor-Tech High Performance "go-fast" boat is tied up at the docks of the Tampa Waterside Marriott Hotel on Garrison Chanel in downtown Tampa. Harbour Island lies just across the channel. The Nor-Tech was joining in a "fun run" sponsored by the West Coast Powerboat Club of Florida. The boat to its left is a Donzi ZR, another fantastic and expensive fantasy-craft. The boats ranged from sport and multi-use center consoles to luxurious performance cruisers plus the a bevy of sleek, colorful Go-Fast boats that such as this Nor-Tech, Spectre, Donzi and Cigarettes. It was a fast, fun and colorful show of watercraft.

No Time For Simple Pleasures

Ah, the simple pleasures. To just kick back and enjoy a fine cigar and superb glass of wine as I explore and capture the people, places and things that are Tampa. It's the good life and terrific city.

I've been absent for several days as an important change have developed that will alter my life and daily routine for many months. It's an extremely positive and even exciting change - a new and challenging opportunity in my career that will take me away from Tampa each day at least through the summer and perhaps into the fall.

I am really looking forward to this unique and unexpected adventure which lies ahead.

I will try to visit your sites and comment as I can, but I won't be able to post with any regularity. I will be buried in new responsibilities and am not sure what the weeks and months ahead will mean to my time. I already miss the fun and great pleasure Tampa Florida Photo and Tampa Daily Photo have given me...and the friendships that I have with you and my loyal Followers.

I will miss you and look forward to the days ahead. When I can, I will return.

This shot was taken from across the Hillsborough River at Plant Park and captures the Kennedy Street bridge and the Regions Financial tower at 100 North Tampa Street. The towering skyscraper stands 579 feet tall and has 42 floors. Currently it is the tallest structure in Tampa and the ninth-tallest building in Florida.

Cold but the fountains at the Straz Center were warm and colorful

We had the good fortune to enjoy an early date night to celebrate Valentine's Day - it's Sunday, the 14th!! - and went to the Straz Center for the Performing Arts to see the musical Godspell. It was performed in my favorite space at the center, the Jaeb Theater. Of the four theaters, this one is next to the smallest in size,

but is the most interesting of all. There are two balconies and the floor surrounding the stage. Everyone sits at small round tables for four, and our seats this evening were at the front, directly at the stage.

The performers came off stage several times onto raised staging in the middle of the audience and it made for a great evening of music of the 1970s made new, dance and song. Even the staging and musicians get my thumbs up for being just right. I highly recommend that you see Godspell; it runs though May 16th.

After the show we walked out toward the Hillsborough River and I took the fountain, gift shop and walkway. It was a really fun night and except for the temperature in the 40s, it was perfect.

Platt Street Bridge is well adorned

Drivers quickly passing over the one-way Platt Street Bridge over the Hillsborough River to downtown would never guess what fine and interesting artwork lies just beneath them. No, I'm not suggesting they slow to take a better look. The many visiting college rowing crews leave their mark on bridges, such as this one built in 1926, and on the seawalls that line the riverfront. It's part of a long tradition they continue as a fun and colorful way to proclaim to all that they were here. May the athletes and their creative endeavors long endure.

Even driving by in the late evening we find Wiliams-Sonoma (visit them online HERE) to be such a warm and welcoming place to visit and shop. No matter the season, or cooking experience level, they have a huge selection, love to help and have such great gifts...Valentine's Day? Perfect. The warmth of the setting sun is washing over the notorious pirate ship Jose Gasparilla. She is rocking gently now and resting at the Tampa Convention Center following last Saturday's Gasparilla invasion and parade. The swashbuckling Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla and their ship led the flotilla up the channel to another successful invasion and capture of the city.

Irving Penn's "Cuzco Children" - Museum of Fine Arts Friends of Photography

At midday we left the craziness of Gasparilla (the people, neighborhood and especially traffic) for downtown St. Petersburg and the Museum of Fine Arts. The occasion was a gathering of the museum's Friends of Photography. Our host was the new president of the Friends, Simone Bennett, the museum director, Dr. John Schloder, and Jennifer Hardin, Chief Curator. The Friends of Photography is a small group of men and women of all ages who admire and truly appreciate the history of photography, photographers and the images created since the mid-19th century until the present. We gathered just before the closing tomorrow of the exhibit Legends of Photography. Afterward we went across to the Parkshore Grill, a fine restaurant, to continue our fascinating conversations. The group includes collectors, photographers, those just started to explore photography, spouses, friends and young couples who work in photography. Terrific folks! I was also looking forward to going to the museum because of the unprecedented exhibition The Baroque World of Fernando Botero. See Tampa Daily Photo HERE for one of my all time favorite Botero sculptures. (The show runs through April 4.)

This exhibition featured more than sixty images chosen from the MFA's collection. The photographs range the very earliest to late 20th century color photographs. Many of the major photographers working from 1900 to 1975 are represented, including Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, Gertrude Käsebier, W. Eugene Smith, Paul Strand, Lewis Hine, Walker Evans, Berenice Abbott, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstadt, Barbara Morgan, Minor White, Aaron Siskind, Harry Callahan, Lucien Clergue, Diane Arbus, Gary Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, William Christenberry, Stephen Shore and and Jerry Uelsmann. Some of the finest images created by these artists are are on the walls.

The prints I've chosen are Irving Penn's 1948 photograph "Cuzco Children," Edward Weston's nude photograph of his lovely muse and wife, Charis Wilson Weston - who died last year at age 95, and Harold Edgerton's dramatic color print from 1957, "Milkdrop Coronet." Dr. Edgerton was the first photographer to take high-speed color photographs and was a pioneer of multi-flash and microsecond imagery. Many of his gorgeous images were reproduced by the now, sadly, discontinued Kodak Dye Transfer process, the finest process ever in color fidelity and most archival of all photographic images.

A New Gasparilla? Seriously?

After citizens and neighborhoods complained about the drinking and rowdiness of Gasparlla parade-goers in past years, the event organizers, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla and representatives of the city of Tampa and the Tampa Police instituted new rules about underage drinking and open containers. They also added hundreds and hundreds of Porta Potties in locations that should prove very advantageous - to homeowners and the general public - the total is now over 1,500. I hope the Gasparilla boat invasion, Parade of the Pirates and street festival is safe and super fun for all. (Sorry that the weather isn't cooperating...stay away rain!!)

NOTE Friends: I have been without Internet, television and telephone (via Verizon FIOS) since last Saturday morning. After TWO in-home visits by service reps - Brian Tackitt, a Fiber Network Field Technician - and our Peke did not bite him - is my new best friend), one brand new router (two days to deliver), 2 1/2 hours on my Blackberry cell with repair, I am BACK and could not be happier!!!!!! I feel like a big part of my life stopped at a fiber-optic cable buried in my front lawn. Past that cable that is supposedly connected (!) to my home, we had NO service.

Last Saturday was Tampa's Gasparilla Children's Parade and it was so much fun watching all the parade goers, vendors and vehicle traffic lost in the streets of South Tampa and Hyde Park.

This street vendor was on South Rome Avenue, about three blocks from Bayshore Boulevard, ground zero for Saturday's parade.

The first of the Gasparilla parades takes place tomorrow; the children's parade and fireworks are the start of a week long festival of parties and celebrations culminating in the annual Gasparilla Invasion and Parade of the Pirates next Saturday. Homes in many of Tampa's neighborhoods are sporting all kinds of pirate-themed decorations including flags, banners and door wreaths. This unique metal yard art was spotted on the lawn of a home in Hyde Park.

This cherubic little fellow sits blowing his conch shell at an entrance to the Davis Islands pool. Located across from the Marjorie Park Yacht Basin, the ornate, Roman style pool was part of the original plan for the islands as conceived by David P. Davis. Built in 1929, the pool is known today as the Roy E. Jenkins Pool.

Sand not snow: A perfect Florida afternoon

We enjoyed such a beautiful afternoon today. It was about 70 with a good breeze and bright sun. I took our Pekingese - Dr. Porter - down to the sand and let him collect stickers in his paws until he had to be rescued and carried off to safety. Not a water dog or one to bound in and out of the surf, but extremely curious and apt to spend 5 minutes sniffing a dead fish or crab shell. What a day!

Tampa's "No. 3 Fire Station" - 1911

Originally built in 1911, Tampa's Number 3 Fire Station, located at Platt Street and Magnolia across from Hyde Park United Methodist Church, was in continuous operation until 1987. Since its retirement, it has been completely restored and is today a private residence. And a very interesting one to say the least.

This was the scene at Palmetto Beach on a September afternoon. You're looking out across McKay Bay at one of the few remaining structures on a stilt foundation. This one is no longer accessible by dock and appears to be abandoned. I chose this scene as one of my best because the unique old structure, sky, clouds and reflections all seemed to come together in a special, painterly way.

These big palms can probably make it through the freezing temps and the forecast calls for the mid-70s in a couple of days. Looks like we (and the palms) will live to tell the tale of Florida's long deep freeze of 2010. Of course we must get through the 35 degrees in the morning. Stay warm all. Keep those dogs in their jackets.

Burning Man?

If you're familiar with the annual Burning Man Festival this may look like it belongs at the next one. In actuality, it's a homeowner attempting to protect a small tree (of some exotic sort) from dying in our recurring below-freezing temperatures. I must say he certainly went to a great deal of trouble constructing this fancy enclosure. After our weather returns to normal I must get a peek at the tree.

Monochrome Weekend: Vol. 2, Issue 20

With morning temperatures in the 20s and highs in the 40s, Tampa is experiencing its own deep-freeze, something we don't see or feel here very often. The minute we get some cold weather, every major grocery store chain begins to sell packaged firewood. Right at the entrance. 6-8 pre-split little logs that fit real well. Neat. Clean. Manageable. ("Honey, could you pick up some cream, a bottle of wine and two packages of firewood, please?) Small stores, such as this place that sells beer and ice, switch over to selling "seasoned" firewood from beat up old wheel barrels. I think this means the oak limbs fell during the summer and they just got around to chopping them up for us fireplace suckers looking for the oak smell during the cold spell. Hey, it works!

Did You Say 27 Degrees?

When Tampa and West Central Florida experience this long a cold spell, with record setting temperatures - near and below freezing lows and highs that are 20-30 degrees lower than normal for this time of year - our outside pets, plants and valuable citrus crop begin to suffer. It's cold for us and tomorrow should be the coldest yet. But, we'll be OK and know that all of you who experience months of freezing weather will soon find these seagulls just waiting to show you our warm sunny beaches.It should be warm again soon.

Icy Cold Plants

These pots did hold lush, overflowing and very leafy green plants. DID. After the last few days of cold and colder temperatures, these ancient looking pots will need to be replanted with something a bit more typical and attractive. The monochrome image fits these gray and drooping plants perfectly. A week from now we'll probably be back to a sweltering 70 degrees. I hope.

Buccaneers Fly High

Their season didn't end in the win column nor are they going to the Super Bowl, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team may have the largest team-logo flag of any professionall ball team...anywhere. At 4,000 square feet, it takes a 150-foot tall pole to keep it flying high and off the ground just outside their headquarters and training ground located on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard near the Raymond James Stadium.

Giant Rolls of Plastic

I did not post yesterday. It nearly killed me to miss connecting with my online world and friends. (I explained the problem over at tampa daily Photo, too.) It was the first time I was unable to use my computer to get online and it all happened unexpectedly. I have made slight references to some major work we discovered had to be done to our 80 year-old "historic" home. Tell-tale signs that something was occurring to the structure old the old, wood-frame house became very apparent in early November. Following meetings and inspections with contractors and an engineer, it was determined that immediate repair had to begin that has involved what amounts to one half of our exterior walls. Of course that led to interior walls and ceilings...and electrical. Yesterday, the incoming Verizon Fios line was disconnected. Not knowingly, carpenters shut down our telephone, television and Internet. (Good thing we have BlackBerry and cell phones although trying to reach emergency repair for Verizon via the Internet is a frustrating experience.) Suffice it to say, they came at 8:00 am this morning and moved our inside Verizon service box and rewired it. I am up online again and the TV is back on.

The photo I posted is of a few pieces of furniture that will remain in two rooms while work continues. One big world of plastic and DUST!!!

I have exhaustively recorded the construction work that has now reached 5 weeks. After today, I will not post another of our "Money Pit" project. I promise!

Outback Bowl: Celebrate New Year's Day in Tampa

You're looking into the snarling, dagger-bearing skull that graces the bow of the full-size pirate ship that sits in the north end of Raymond James Stadium at Tampa Bay Buccaneers games its cannons fire and it's filled with rowdy swashbuckling souls having a great time. A Tampa tradition for New Year's Day is to celebrate the Outback Bowl played at the Stadium. (The Outback chain of restaurants was founded in Tampa.) This year's teams were the Northwestern University Wildcats versus the Auburn University Tigers. The Outback Bowl is a college football game matching teams from the SEC and Big Ten Conference (3rd pick from each). At the 11:00 am kickoff it was gray and cloudy with intermittent rain showers. Luckily we had passes to a warm and cozy luxury suite so our accommodations, food and drink were excellent. This winter weather is ushering in a cold front that's moving into the Tampa Bay area this evening. Tomorrow's high is forecast to be 58 degrees and a low of 37. Knowing how bone-chilling cold some parts of the US are right now, we folks in Tampa will live through it. The Northwestern fans like this fellow celebrated with tailgate parties, plenty of suds, food and a bit of creative, body-painting flair. Plus, the Auburn tiger was not being treated too respectively at the end of the chain. Auburn won a pretty good game , 38 to 35.

New Toy for Christmas

No, not the fine sailboat but the camera I shot it with. This scene is of boats at the docks of the Marjorie Yacht Basin on the east channel of Davis Islands.

NOTE: My son gave me a Nikon D80 camera body for Christmas. (He's a generous young fellow!!) I took a couple of days to try, try to gain some familiarity with its digital operation and features. I am excited that the Nikkor lenses that I have had for 30-40 years DO work with this new body. (I have not shot film through the F2 or other misc. Nikons in close to ten years.) It's great they fit and they feel like old friends as I mounted them to the D80 to go out shooting today. BUT, they are not auto in any way so this first effort is not to my crisp standards. I'm learning and will get better.

We Need Them FAST: Amazon Hose and Rubber

The entire wall of the 40,000 square foot Amazon Hose and Rubber Company is covered with an expertly painted Pop art mural. The series of colorful, finely-rendered panels look as though the famed American artist Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) descended on this busy East Tampa road and did his masterful best. (Visit the Lichtenstein Foundation HERE.) Located on 50th Street in Tampa, Amazon also has facilities in Orlando and Miami and offers hydraulic and industrial hose products (I wonder if their other buildings also feature giant comic-strip panels?)

This monumental-sized mural was the creation of Vitale Art & Design Studio (visit their website HERE), located across Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg. My compliments to the artists who made this building look spectacular and to the company that recognizes how important art is to their employees, customers, neighborhood and our city. If you live near or travel on 50th, look to your right just as you drive north from Adamo Drive/Highway 60 - Careful as this is a very busy commercial highway.

Monster Assembly for Christmas

Yes, even as your kids have families of their own, grandparents can still have all the fun of assembling toys for little ones at Christmas. Usually this involves - OK, it always involves buying something you would have died for as a kid...if such a toy had even been invented, imagined or dreamed of. (My best present at the tender age of 3 or 4 was a Buck Rogers spaceship made out of sturdy cardboard. I'll never forget it!!) This year I had to buy a Fisher Price Power Wheels Craftsman F-150 riding truck for a fine grandson. A Monster Truck. I did want to buy it last year but was convinced he was too young. Yea, right. So I waited. A whole year.
This truck has "Monster Traction™" and can navigate sidewalks, lawns, neighbors' bushes with precision, even concrete lawn statues. It can easily take out moms, grandmothers and small barking, snarling Pekingese who think it's a giant vacuum cleaner. Without a scratch. Believe it or not, it has a real FM radio, truck bed with a drop-down tailgate, Velcro seat belts, folding side mirrors, cup holders (CUP HOLDERS!!), a battery charge indicator light and two speeds...drive and hit things or drive even faster and hit things with more force. (It is currently governed to slow.) It also goes in reverse. CAUTION: This toy can NOT be driven in a home. Got it? Assembly only took forever and requires assistance (HINT: Ask a big strong son with an engineer's brain and an architect's degree to be your apprentice elf and to help lift it in and out of a reasonable size SUV for transport to a safe, open park area or sibling's home to show off your, I mean the grandson's new "toy.")

You should have seen the little guy's expression. Pure joy. Truly, PRICELESS. And he had his seat-belt on and was operating the FM radio before even starting the motor. FM radio??!!

St. Nicholas was revered for his secret gift-giving

Santa with a touch of Tampa's Jose Gaspar

Each year in February, Tampa is invaded by Jose Gaspar and his band of pirates of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla. Along with several other equally as colorful and fun-filled Krewe's of party-goers and parade participants, the city surrenders to the loud, bead-throwing invaders after a spectacular waterborne invasion of ships, cannons and rowdy swashbucklers.

This Christmas tree ornament represents a Santa with a slight Gaspar pirate-theme...not your traditional Santa Claus but a uniquely Tampa-themed, jolly old St. Nicholas. (He's really a friendly guy under the outlandish garb and equally as generous.)

Taste of Spain: Tampa's heritage

Tampa's Hispanic history and heritage is actually a wonderful combination of Latin foods, music and language. Spanish, Cuban, Italian, Jewish and even German immigrants all came to Tampa's Ybor City and worked to make Tampa the Cigar Capital of the World. The city and its residents are filled with rich and proud traditions. And delicious food. (Did I already say that?) Tinatapas in Channelside was ready fro diners today and will be there with open arms tomorrow.

Snow removal was not necessary for this shot...you really can sit outside. It is perfect winter weather.

This giant wall-size mural outside Splitsville in Channelside represent girl bowling at its best. Depending on how you look at it, and your seat at the lane, this bowling technique, refined over the years by girls and women of every age, makes every man feel superior...and more and more in love with the opposite sex. You go girls. Throw that ball however it suits you. We love you even more for your ball handling skills. (Notice that on these near-freezing nights in Tampa - when it threatens to drop into the 40s - establishments provide these effective gas heating units as you can see in the bottom right.)

One Big BAD Cookie!

This is a wonderful holiday display at the nearby Williams-Sonoma store, a perennial favorite of mine for kitchen and cooking gifts for the most-deserving Mrs. Tampa DP. I was strolling and window shopping when this gigantic cookie appeared; it must be about 6-feet across, which we all know is silly and impossible. (But it sure did catch my eye.!) If I could find Oreos this size I'd stock up and retire to a secluded island and live out my life feasting on overstuffed sandwich cookies filled with delicious white mush. (Oreo cookies are a personal weakness.)

If you look closely you can make out the reflections of streetlights and windows of the retailer Restoration Hardware in the lower portion of the cookie.

Hisbiscus and Bromeliad tree at Tommy Bahama

Walking past this window in Hyde Park Village, notice the tropical theme and absence of parkas, mittens, wool scarfs and ice scrapers. Although I love looking at snow-covered blogs, this is more my idea of the perfect winter holiday season. (I admit that I did have a light jacket on because of a mist in the air.) I've done my share of shoveling driveways and trying to get cars to start in below freezing weather. Humbug.

Take note that there are dozens of things in this Tommy Bahama window that would make lots of big boys and girls happy this Christmas. The oversize cigar ashtray is just one attractive looking item that caught my eye. Just thought I'd mention it (in case Santa reads my blog!)

Giant-Sized PLAYMOBIL Santa

This huge Santa is proudly welcoming kids to the Learning Express store in Hyde Park Village. He's not an actual retail version of aPlaymobil toy figure but a promotional piece standing at the entrance to attract bright-eyed boys and girls. Each one enter the wonderful store with dreams of sugarplums and stockings filled with fun and imaginative toys. Learning Express is filled with things that the founder thought "should encourage creativity and learning, foster developmental growth, and, of course, be fun." It is a really terrific place to take young ones and watch them explore and play. It is not in any way a typical toy store. It's filled with tons of stuff and NO switches. Just well designed goodies and toys that they will treasure for years. (Visit and learn more about Learning Express HERE.)

I wonder how many kids have either thought this Saint Nicholas at the door is real, or asked mom, dad or grandparents to buy him for them to play with? Come to think of it, it'd look good next to our life-size toy soldier. What do you mean he's not for sale??!! I'll put him on my list that's going to the elves at the North Pole.

Adults Only: CinéBistro in Hyde Park Village

CinéBistro opened on Swann Avenue in Hyde Park Village a few months ago and is an interesting and attractive entertainment concept. ADULTS ONLY. ID required proving you're 21 years of age or older. This is not the place to bring the grandkids to or send teenagers for a Saturday afternoon matinee.

If you haven't heard of CineBistro, or other theaters like it, it's a specially-designed movie palace which shows new releases such as Invictus, The Blind Side and New Moon, which are playing in multiplexes all over the city and nation. And all three are rated PG-13, so this isn't "adult entertainment" in the tawdry sense of the term. Nope, it's the experience, food, beverage and seating which keeps out the the younger folk. (Very thoughtful.) It's the fact that it's reserved for the older, adult audience that makes this place special and quite alluring. Even romantic.

Here is how Cobb Theatre, which brought CineBistro to Tampa, describes it: "CinéBistro, Cobb Theatres’ extraordinary premium movie theatre and dining experience captured in one unique entertainment venue, is changing the way people watch movies, create romantic moments, eat and socialize." Don't mess with the big white bird

The beach was so warm and relaxing this afternoon and there were several birds along the shore. Our Pekingese likes the sand as long as he doesn't get too dirty...he is NOT a waterdog that leaps into the waves or a rough and tumble farm-yard dog who might chase the cows or horses. Nope. He kind of prefers the lazy approach to life and his energy level and snippy disposition seems about right. Even though he is a Florida native, he's not fond of the sand (or grass for that matter) but will sniff around for something new and interesting. A bird? A big white bird? Just sitting there? (Not to worry. They are almost the same size and Porter doesn't have a beak or claws. It wouldn't even be a fair fight because Porter doesn't fly very well.)

No, Porter did not have fresh white bird meat in his bowl of kibbles. There isn't even the slightest chance he could catch this fine bird. But, the thought still crossed his mind. Look at his huge eyes, steely gaze and determined set to his jaw. He is on the hunt!

Matt Larson: Professional Photographer Plays With Toy Cameras

Tonight we went to a really fun holiday open house party hosted by good friends who are both extremely talented artists. Matt is the hard-working photographer and career marketing guru while his wife, Rebecca Sexton Larson - Becky - is the accomplished studio artist and museum professional. I wrote about our terrific time tonight at Tampa Daily Photo HERE where I featured Becky's work and bio. The party was a lot of fun. Good food, delicious bourbon egg-nog and terribly interesting people. Nothing is more fun than to be invited to a party. Our hosts threw open their home, every nook and cranny, to show off their work and invite guests to make a purchase...and that is not hard to do. Look at my shot of just the beautifully framed photos spread out under their tree. Every room and surface was displaying their framed and oversized, unframed pieces. Just begging to go home with you. It's very tempting and impossible to resist if you love and collect photography. Matt has enjoyed a long career working with "grown-up" Nikons and other heavy and expensive pro equipment. While he still uses the mega-bodies and bags of lens in his work, he plays a lot with every kind of toy camera made in the world - with fascinating and astonishing results. The shot above is taken with his Apple I-Phone; one of these brand new images was sold this evening.
Here is an excerpt from Matt's online bio: "A professional newspaper marketing photographer working with toy cameras of all types (Holga, Diana, Polaroid, iPhone, Argus Bean, etc.). Why you ask? Why not. Matt was given a professional Nikon camera and darkroom outfit before he reached age 10. Both his father and bother were avid photographers. He attended the University of South Florida and obtained a B.A. degree in photojournalism. Many years later, he completed his MBA degree at Saint Leo University. Larson admits that his discovery of plastic toy cameras reignited his love for photography and has brought him back to those early years of just having fun playing around in the darkroom and making art."

Let It Sunshine, Let It Sunshine ...

(Sing to the tune, "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.") When there is no hope or expectation of snow at Christmas - like here every year - the next best thing is to head over and enjoy Mickey's Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World and its snowy wonderland. Just think, you can leave all your wool sweaters and Gortex cold weather gear at the Florida border and come dressed in shorts, shirtsleeves and sunglasses.

Sorry about the palm trees sticking up from this Disney billboard. The scene does look like many of your posts showing the real wintry scenes. And real cold temperatures. Stay warm everyone. (Even if you do have to come south to the Sunshine State for some relieve from winter.)

A Guy's Got to Dry His Feathers

Gray and "wintry" overcast skies are Tampa's norm for the past couple days so it's tough finding even a tiny bit of sun and shadow to help enhance an image. I went back to a series of images from a perfectly hot late summer day and pulled out a bird I found sunning himself and drying his feathers. Tomorrow, I will go out again, with renewed energy and determination, and find something bright, shiny and warm. Hey, it is Tampa. How long can the sky look like it could snow?

Wienermobile is REAL!

I can't help but smile every time I have caught even a glimpse of the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile. Who ever came up with the original idea was a genius. Pure genius. Whether it's being driven down the highway or sitting parked on display, it stops adults and kids dead in their tracks. The Wienermobile is a marketing and promotional extravaganza on wheels. (Now, if I could just drive it for a few minutes...and eat a dog or two. Do you think they serve a cold frothy Guinness Stout?)

These three maidens are almost ready for their big unveiling in Tampa's new Bern's Park on South Howard Avenue. The park is named in memory of Bern Laxer, founder of world-famous Bern's Steak House (click HERE). Laxer, who died in 2004, founded his restaurant in 1956 and carefully guided it to near perfection. Renowned for its incredible steaks and organic vegetables from Bern's own gardens, it boasts the largest wine selection of any restaurant in the world. (I will be sure and capture the statues after they are revealed.)

The restaurant Bahama Breeze out on Rocky Point sees its share of jet traffic overhead from Tampa International Airport. Plus, its location out Courtney Campbell Causeway in Old Tampa Bay means its waterfront comes alive with sunshine or the rains and strong winds we have experienced the last couple of days.

Rain on my Poincettia

It is pouring rain here in Tampa and has been all day. Poinsettias appear magically at our home every year at Christmas time (my dear sweetheart and caroler is responsible I know!) and decorate our home during the holiday season. These are raindrops I tried to capture on plants just out in front surrounded by Christmas lights.

I found the history of Poinsettias so interesting. They are native to Mexico and the Aztecs called the poinsettia Cuetlaxochitl. During the 14th - 16th century the sap was used to control fevers and even used to make a reddish dye. Montezuma, the last of the Aztec kings, would have poinsettias brought into what now is Mexico City by caravans because poinsettias could not be grown in the high altitude. Interestingly, Roberts Poinsett was the first United States Ambassador to Mexico, being appointed by President John Quincy Adams in the 1820's. During his stay he looked for new plants. In 1828, he found a beautiful shrub with large red flowers and he took cuttings and brought them back to the United States. Later he named the plant the poinsettia in honor of his discovery.
