Up on Stilts on McKay Bay

This was the scene at Palmetto Beach this afternoon as I explored the remaining structures left out on stilts foundations in McKay Bay. Not but a few yards from the seawall, this one is no longer accessible by dock and appears to be abandoned. I don't know anything about its ownership or legal status, but it sure makes a perfect subject for the camera. The sky, clouds and reflections all combine to add special elements to the resulting image. I also photographed it in black and white, my original intention for my posting for MONOCHROME Weekly, Aileni's weekly blog adventure in black and white. Go to Tampa Daily Photo HERE to see a shot that's similar but in black, white and shades of gray. I like them both but don't know which I like better. What do you think?

  3. My vote is still on the monochrome version, but a lazy day learning to fish wouldn't be a bad day in retirement.

  4. You know, most houses in the Philippines in the past were built on stilts, which persisted even when stone was used. I think we have to start building like this again…

  6. I like the way the water looks in this one, but I think I still prefer the black and white.

  7. Well executed, Frank. I think I like the color better...it's more, well, Florida. I find places like this so interesting. It would be fun to find out its history and what happened and what might become of it...I'm not asking you to do all that, though...just some things that come to mind.

The colors and reflections here are wonderful...it reeks with the aura of a hot Florida afternoon.

  8. @ Hilda - Even stilts can't help when the water gets as high as it did in your beautiful city. Thank you for your comment. Stay SAFE!!

  9. @ Jacob - It WAS hot and I had the dog with me. He was about to expire in the heat. I have wanted to shoot this particular stilt structure for some time but wanted a powerful sky of blue and lots of clouds. I think the color image is my favorite of the two, but the b/w is a bit different and I like it, too. I'm glad now that I shot it both ways and could see the results. (I KNOW that there must be some detail on this stilt building somewhere but so far I can't find out anything. There's a good story here. I think the dock was washed away and then they wouldn't allow it to be rebuilt...my guess.)
